Well if exercise don’t burn calories then how would we explain 5 kg’s weight loss (35000 cals deficit) in 2 weeks?
Key elements: Vegetarian student
- Morning training at 10am in fasted state
- Lunch at 12.30pm – home cooked veggies or eggs with roti or bread
- Snack at 4pm – whey protein – 1.5 scoop + dry fruits
- Evening training at clinic – 5pm
- Dinner at 8.30pm – home cooked dinner – rice/roti/veggies/lentils/mushroom
Observation: Why do I get surprised by the presence of bulkier players at the highest level, despite their adherence to proper training and nutrition? Even more perplexing is the fact that they maintain their bulkiness throughout their careers.
Weight Loss:
Inquiry: What amount of weight do you believe is possible to shed in a span of 15 days?
Inquiry: Is it feasible to achieve a 5kg weight loss within a two-week timeframe?
If you had asked me this question a week back; my answer would have been ‘no’!
It’s happened! The outcome is as astonishing to me as it may be to you. While I initially expected a 3-kilogram loss, the reality of shedding 5 kilograms never crossed my mind, especially considering there were no restrictions on food intake—referred to as ad libitum in scientific terms (eating to fullness). Even accounting for a potential loss of 500 grams/1kg due to fluid balance, this still represents a significant weight reduction in just two weeks. Weight loss was never the target. He came to me to train and increase his bowling pace. What he did not understand and I did was that weight loss is a key factor contributing to increased pace.
Note: To keep a strict control, I had kept the lad at my place and provided him with food. As mentioned above the food was a nice mix of protein, carbs, and fat (Extra virgin olive oil and ghee sometimes)
Structure:
Ques: How do I train a fast bowler to enhance their pace?
First and foremost, an increase in pace results from structure, which inadvertently leads to improved strength. In a sporting context, strength essentially involves becoming more proficient at generating force during movement.
Ques: Which specific movements are we referring to?
Sporting movements.
Another crucial factor in a short training period or camp is ‘recovery’.
Recovery serves as the foundation for improvement. Whether it’s for energy or movement, one can only become effortless or efficient when their body is fully recovered. I’ve consistently emphasized the significance of recovery in my studies as the key to enhanced performance, especially within a limited time frame. This study is no exception.
The only distinction in this study lies in our focus on structural training during recovery sessions for the lower limbs, following the morning training because of lack of time.
Training Schedule: 15 sessions x 2/day
Morning: Agility, speed, neural, movement, and other forms of training
Evening: Structural training for the upper limbs and light movement recovery for the lower limbs.
P.S.: Keep an eye out for this player in the upcoming T20 World Cup. This is just the beginning, and there’s more work to be done.
Its not possible to present accurate hypothesis without proper testing however I can conclude the following that worked in my view:
- Exercising driven Mitochondrial health improvement. The progression in all exercises was intentionally focussed on fat oxidation with intermittent bouts of light movements, CPR and Glycolysis driven pace in the morning. The evening training of an hour and half was majorly driven fat oxidation. Increasing number of mitochondria’s while simulataneously improving muscle uptake of glucose was the objective to prepare the sessions.
- Metabolic flexibility– training in fasted mode helped improve fat oxidation for sure. And considering the morning training consumed most of his glycogen stores, the subsequent meal helped replenish glycogen stores
Overall, its hard to predict what actually happened physiologically to bring about this weight loss without proper testing but know that this is not the first time its happened. I am so much used to of seeing this my training camps where there is always an exception where the weight loss cant be explained with science.
