Understanding Vitamin D: A Perspective for Indians
Today, I want to discuss the facts about Vitamin D and why Indians should not need to be as concerned about it as often suggested. This supplement is frequently recommended for nearly everyone in India experiencing metabolic issues or other issues.
Key Scientific Facts:
1) Skin Pigmentation: Indians typically have darker skin, which produces less 2) Vitamin D from sunlight compared to individuals with lighter skin. This is nature’s way of adapting to our environment – white skin synthesises upto 20 times more than brown skin.
3) Dietary Sources: Many Indians consume a significant amount of dairy, which is recognized as a good source of Vitamin D.
4) Varied Recommendations: The recommended levels of Vitamin D differ across countries, reflecting diverse dietary habits and environmental factors.
Genetic Influence:
5) Vitamin D levels are closely linked to our genetics. If my genes predispose me to lower blood Vitamin D levels, there’s likely a reason for that.
6) Measurement Challenges: Accurately measuring Vitamin D levels in the body can be problematic. Blood tests typically indicate only the circulating levels of Vitamin D, which are significantly influenced by genetic factors.
Questions Addressed in the Podcast:
a) Given these considerations, what should our recommended intake of Vitamin D be?
b) Should we consider supplementation? If so, what dosage is appropriate?
c) How can we determine if we are Vitamin D deficient?
